What's the oldest item of clothing in your closet right now? How old is it? What's the story behind it?

(And we're looking for folks interested in hosting the conversation for a day or two in April! If you're interested, let us know over here.)

A slip that buttons? How intriguing! Are the buttons down the front? The back? Straps buttoning onto the bodice?

I am a big believer in using treasured heirlooms. I wore out the quilt that my maternal grandmother made for my mom, which my mom had kept carefully wrapped up in the linen closet for most of my childhood...

Thank you for your kind offer of condolences. It happened a long time ago, so I don't feel in need of sympathy, but I appreciate the thought.

There was a single button at the (narrow) waistband to fasten it. When open, there was a slash-opening (like at the top of a shirt) of several inches, enough to allow you to slide the slip over your hips, but not so much that you'd be left with a big gap once it was buttoned again. I think the opening (and button) went down the side. Does that make sense?

That absolutely does make sense—thanks for explaining!
