Daily discussion post: look in your closet

What's the oldest item of clothing in your closet right now? How old is it? What's the story behind it?

(And we're looking for folks interested in hosting the conversation for a day or two in April! If you're interested, let us know over here.)

Is there a story about how or when the Peace patch ended up on a Marine Corps shirt?

My dad joined the Marines right out of high school, in 1970. He was gung-ho, wanted to go to Vietnam. They sent him to Turkey instead. (Lucky for me!) At some point during his enlistment, my dad changed his mind about war. He started circulating an underground newspaper promoting peace and sewed the patch on his shirt. Shortly after I was born in 1973, my dad and the Marine Corp mutually agreed that they should part ways.

He's been a peace-loving vegetarian ever since he got out.
